MAIN IDEAS
A mineral is a naturally occuring inorganic solid with a definite chemical composition and crystalline structure.  Minerals are the building blocks of rocks.

How many minerals on earth?  4,000!

More than 90% of all minerals are made of silicon and oxygen.

Silicon and oxygen are the two most common elements on earth.

Only 30 out of 4,000 minerals are common.

 

SNIFC:  the five requirements to be considered a mineral.

S – Solid (not a liquid or gas)

N – Naturally occuring (cannot be articicial)

I – Inorganic (not living)

F – Fixed composition (made of the same material throughout)

C – Crystalline (forms natural crystal shapes)
