Seasons

  • Tilt of Earth’s axis
  • Direction of orbit (revolution)
  • Reading a diagram of Earth’s seasons (as viewed from space)
  • Equinoxes and Solstices (amount of daylight and darkness during each event)
  • Exact date(s) of the equinoxes and solstices
  • Northern vs. Southern Hemisphere (seasons are opposite)
  • Revolution (One Earth year) = 365.25 days
  • Rotation (One Earth day) = 24 hours

  • As seen from Earth
  • As seen from space
  • Waxing vs. waning
  • Names and order of the moon phases (new moon, waxing crescent, 1st quarter, etc)

  • Explain why people on Earth always see the same side of the moon
  • Explain why you cannot see the moon during new moon phase

Moon Rotation & Revolution

  • Moons Rotation = 27.3 days
  • Moon’s Revolution = 27.3 days
  • One cycle of moon phases = 29.5 days

Lunar Eclipse

  • Relative position of the Sun, Earth, and moon:  Earth is between the Sun and the moon
  • Label the umbra and penumbra on a diagram

Solar Eclipse

  • Relative position of the Sun, Earth, and moon:  Moon is between the Sun and the Earth
  • Label the umbra and penumbra on a diagram
